JACKPINE WRITERS' BLOC Presents a Writers' Workshop Writing the Short Short
Instructor: Marge Barrett of The Loft Literary Center
Saturday July 24, 2010, beginning at 10 AM Brigadoon Farm on the Crow Wing River
27518 243rd Avenue, Nimrod, MN 56477 Jerry Mevissen, Prop. 218/472-3400 or riverman@wcta.net
This workshop will center on writing short-shorts (under 1000 words). We'll read short stories across the genres: fiction, nonfiction, prose poetry, from masters of the form -- Stuart Dybek, Donald Barthelme, Jamaica Kincaid, Naomi Shihab Nye, and two northern Minnesota writers, Louis Jenkins and Connie Wanek. We'll discuss how these writers maximize effect with a minimum of words. We'll do a number of exercises focusing on the essentials of good storytelling -- developing plot, character, dialogue, point of view, image and metaphor. Finally, we'll critique each other's work. Plan for fun in this experimental, imaginative form, which according to Vestal Review, "engages your mind not only for the short duration of its read, but for long time after."
Cost: $30 includes snacks/meals. Class size limited to 20 students. Send reservations to Jackpine Writers' Bloc, 13320 149th Avenue, Menahga, MN 56464 Limited overnight accommodations are available at Brigadoon Farm. Call for details. Arrive early; stay late. Wine and readings at 5. Bonfire at midnight. Brunch on Sunday morning for the overnight crowd.
